What Is a ‘Suitably Qualified Individual (SQI)’ in Ireland?
Converting a vehicle, whether it’s for camping, wheelchair access, or a new work setup, can be a great upgrade to make. But once the job’s done, you may still need a sign-off from a Suitably Qualified Individual (SQI) before it’s road legal in Ireland. The question is, what exactly is an SQI?
A Suitably Qualified Individual is someone officially recognised by Revenue and the RSA to inspect modified vehicles and confirm they meet safety and construction standards. Their certification is often needed to support Vehicle Modification Engineers Reports, or register a converted vehicle through VRT.
When is an SQI Report Needed?
You’ll likely need an SQI inspection if your vehicle has undergone any major modifications. This is especially the case when talking about modifications that change your vehicle’s structure, weight, or seating. This includes:
Converting a van to a camper or motorhome
Making accessibility adaptations for disabled use
Modifying a vehicle’s chassis, suspension, or bodywork
In many of these situations, an SQI sign-off is needed before you can complete a Commercial Vehicle CVRT, Campervans CVRT, or Motor Homes CVRT. It might also be required when getting Seat Belt Certificates, Tachograph checks, or Speed Limiter testing, depending on how the vehicle is used.
